JOHN BATCHELOR SHOW
Hour One
Friday  24 April 2015  / Hour 1, Block A: Harry Siegel, New York Daily News, in re: The agenda of a political party you’ve likely never heard of, one with just a handful of members and that’s never elected a candidate of its own to an office higher than state senator, is driving much of the national conversation.
Friday  24 April 2015  / Hour 1, Block B:  Robert Zimmerman, behindtheblack.com, in re: Hubble finds something astronomers can’t explain  The uncertainty of science: The Hubble Space Telescope has spotted the explosion of a star that does not fit into any theory for stellar evolution.
The exploding star, which was seen in the constellation Eridanus, faded over two weeks — much too rapidly to qualify as a supernova. The outburst was also about ten times fainter than most supernovae, explosions that destroy some or all of a star. But it was about 100 times brighter than an ordinary nova, which is a type of surface explosion that leaves a star intact. “The combination of properties is puzzling,” says Mario Livio, an astrophysicist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. “I thought about a number of possibilities, but each of them fails” to account for all characteristics of the outburst, he adds. We can put this discovery on the bottom of a very long list of similar discoveries by Hubble, which this week is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its launch.
On that note, as part of that celebration Space.com today has published a long interview with me about Hubble and my book, The Universe in a Mirror, the saga of the Hubble Space Telescope and the visionaries who built it. They have also published an excerpt from the book.

Contributing writer Ethan Epstein visits the northern plains to discover what happens when the oil and the economy stops flowing. FULL STORY
Hour Two
Friday  24 April 2015  / Hour 2, Block A:  James Taranto, Wall Street Journal, in re: Mrs Clinton and Uranium One. Russia owns about 20% of US uranium. New York Times eventually publishes an ambiguous, waffling report.  Jonathan Chait, eloquent defender of Mrs Clinton: critique of Bill Clinton's post-presidency ("a disaster").  Chait claims that Bill Clinton urged Mrs Clinton to take the position of Secretary of State.  Mr Clinton's private interests benefitted from his wife's public work.  Three theories on what the NYT is up to: 1. Trying to get everything out early and push her out of the race; 2. Trying same, to help her stay in race.  3. The Times is committing journalism – and well done!
Anticipatory Buyer's Remorse-  Liberals react to the Clinton news.  As we surveyed the liberal reaction to this week’s Hillary Clinton news, a phrase came to mind: “anticipatory buyer’s remorse.” We wondered if it was an original coinage, and Google answered in the negative. Gail Collins had used it in a signed editorial about Bill Bradley’s plan to run for president in 2000: Mr. Bradley’s decision to run for the Presidency seems like a reasonable political calculation even though Vice President Gore is far and away the front-runner. About a year from now, according to Democratic contrarians, many primary voters may wake up to the near-inevitability of Mr. Gore’s Presidential nomination and suffer a case of anticipatory buyer’s remorse. Given the present level of public cynicism about politics, the malady will probably be as profound as it is premature, its chief symptom being a desperate flailing around for somebody who seems better, or at least different. It is the Bruce Babbitt/Paul Tsongas role, and it has always been short-term employment. (Buyer’s remorse is usually followed by grudging submission.)

Hour Three
Friday  24 April 2015  / Hour 3, Block A:  Michael Vlahos, Naval War College, & Jerry Hendrix, Director of the Defense Strategies and Assessments Program, Center for a New American Security; in re:   The testimony on the Indo-Pacific in the 21st Century before the  Senate Armed Services Committee on the China challenge for the 21st Century (1 of 4)
--MEV:   "Three-quarters likely that war with China will occur "– but that's a literary analysis from ancient Greece. Not our world today.
1.  The four voices take distinct approaches.  Allison appeals for balance and emphasizes that war is not inevitable, but is historically probable.  Campbell asserts that the "lion's share of the 21st century will be written in Asia."  Green lists what must be done to contain the China threat using geography and allies.  Roughead speaks to hardware/software needs for the fleet as the PLAN surges.
2.  I would like to take each POV and speak to capabilities of the DOD and the political class.  E.G. the 114th Congress is focused on the Middle East.  State Department is fighting a civil war in Ukraine.  CIA is fighting several civil wars in Mesopotamia.  Who is watching Asia??  Also. Hillary Clinton is the presumptive nominee and winner of the WH for 2017-2025.  What is HRC is Asia?  What is HRC thinking for the fleet?
3.  The US v Japan tangle, 1900-1945 is the model we have.  The Carolinas and South China Sea and the Singapore and Malacca Strait and Sri Lanka are not moving.  But the theater is now three dimensions plus the WMD of cyber, and much of it can be robots.
